VALERIE’S TIP #1
Nutrition accounts for 80% of weight loss results. Regardless of what you do in the gym your body will only transform into red carpet worthy if you fuel your body the right way.
One of my main tips with regards to nutrition is to always pre-prepare your food.
I always say if you leave nutrition to chance it WON’T happen. . . Plan ahead!
I might pre-prepare a bunch of healthy food on Sunday. I like to go to the Farmers Market and then wash all the veggies as soon as I get home so they are ready for a quick meal.
I also might grill a bunch of chicken breasts and then chop them up and put them in the fridge for lunch and snacks.
VALERIE’S TIP #2
You don-t have to be in the mood for exercise!
Even fit people aren-t always in the mood for their workouts. I have been exercising regularly since I was 14 years-old. And I am in the gym all day with clients.
I can assure you-I am not always in the mood, but I know I will feel better when I-m done.
My motto, -You are just one workout away from a good mood- has served me well.
Sometimes it-s just a matter of getting started; fire up the nervous system; juice the joints; get your heart pumping.
After about 10-15 minutes you-ve started to feel lighter. And dare I say happier? It is on these days that exercise can serve one of its most important functions-changing states.
VALERIE’S TIP #3
It gets easier. The habit of it gets easier.
You automatically make better food choices. You don-t have to consciously decide between the jelly donut or the yogurt and fruit because the jelly donut was never an option.
Fit people don-t wake up and wonder if maybe they should go to the gym. If it-s Monday, then they know it is their Strength Day and that they have an appointment with themselves in the weight room; or it is their Interval Day and they are sure to pack their running shoes.
VALERIE’S TIP #4
Learn to Cook!
Fit people know that it-s important to learn to cook because it gives you the ability to control what you put into your body.
Eating out all the time is not only expensive, but can easily ruin your good intentions. Even when you think you-ve ordered the -healthy option-, you have no idea how much oil or butter your food was cooked in-and that-s not to mention portion control.
Fit people know that cooking for yourself is the easiest way to maintain and control your diet, and a great way to show care for yourself and your loved ones.
VALERIE’S TIP #5
Everyday is a great day for a New Year-s Resolution!
Fit people make resolutions all year round. If your New Year-s resolution is to get in better shape, it-s imperative that you revisit your resolution and recommit monthly – weekly even.
Most New Year-s resolutions are forgotten or abandoned by February. Don-t make the same mistake this year!
Write it down and modify or adjust your resolution weekly to make sure it remains realistic and obtainable. A resolution is merely a formal expression of intention, to come to a definite or earnest decision to do something.
Fit people are constantly writing down their intentions i.e. -I intend to reduce my body fat by 3% in the next 8 weeks- or -I intend to eat only clean foods: whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and lean proteins-.
Don-t become intimidated by the word -Resolution-. Follow your intentions, remain proactive and aware of progress/setbacks and you-ll be well on your way to better you in the New Year!
VALERIE’S TIP #6
Be a little selfish.
Fit people know that there-s nothing wrong with taking time for yourself. It-s important to take some time out of your day to do things just for you, such as pre-preparing your meals for the week, and setting time aside for you daily workout. Allow yourself to rest and regroup-if you feel you might be too busy to do this, find an open slot in your planner and pencil yourself in.
Taking care of yourself will enable you to be more present in everyday life. By being just a little bit selfish, you-ll actually be making yourself more available to the people who surround you.
